I'm really really confused. I don't like my room. It feels like something bad.

Apple juice is good, it's my favorite! And I don't know which boy it is because both boys were calling people smelly, but maybe he's the one talking to the French girl and he's okay. So you can invite him if you want! We can invite him and then we can have some juice, okay?

[She blushes awkwardly when Emily compliments her on her hair; she was never good at receiving compliments when she was young.] Thanks! Sometimes it's always messy, though, even when I brush it real good. It gets fluffy when it's like that.

I think it's real pretty! It's-

[Emily trails off and smiles at Libby, suddenly shy. She backs off and makes her way to the kitchen. She gets plastic cups and pours them each some apple juice, only spilling a little.]

Here. [Thrusts the cup at Libby and sits down at the table with it, swinging her legs. She spreads paper out and a rag-tag collection of pens and pencils.]

And here's the things for drawing.

Thanks! [Libby puts the cup on the table and plunks herself down into a chair. She picks up a pencil and starts to doodle.]

How old are you? I'm five and a half. That's practically almost six!

[Her doodle is taking the shape of a 'kitty'.]

[Emily takes a big gulp of her juice then picks up a colored marker with a sticky fist. While she starts her masterpiece, she answers:]

I'm five and four months, so you're- you're- [She frowns and stops coloring so she can think it through.]

You're two months older!

[Libby nods yes.] Uh-huh. And when I'm really six I get to leave kindergarten and go into the special classes my family does. They train you to think things and do lots of cool stuff when you grow up.

[The kitty is finished; she draws a clumsy speech bubble coming from the cat's mouth, and fills it with an all-capitals "MEE-OW!"]

[Emily's coloring has formed a sort of blob in the middle that she's proudly thinking of as a princess' dress. (It really looks like a squashed beetle.) She sets her marker aside a moment and takes a quick flip through her journal, scribbling in a few replies to whatever strikes her fancy.

A little absently, she asks:]

What kinda cool stuff?

Like...how to find places that are hard to find. And how to make your mind go to the future or maybe the past and stuff sometimes. But if you do it wrong then the inside of your head gets all full of blood and you die. It's hard stuff to do.

[Quite unperturbed by her explanation, she starts to draw a smiley-face sun and moon.]

I can do that stuff but it's only pretend. Sometimes I have powers that let me go into the past and I'm a princess in a tower and sometimes I can go to the future and then I'm a space princess like in movies.

[Emily stops, takes a big kid gulp of juice, and looks at Libby, with her head tilted to the side.]

Can your family really do that?

[Libby nods again, her feet kicking as she swings her legs.] Ah-huh. I don't really know why but it's for something really important. This guy named Jacob took something that belonged to one of my uncles or something and he needs it back. [She shrugs.] I dunno what he wants back, though.

He's a meanie. It's not nice to steal things. You have to share everything.

[She frowns down at her picture for a while, then brightens up as she changes the subject.]

Oh! I want to invite Ralphie to come and play with us but you can help me pick too and what do you think?

Okay, Ralphie can come and we should invite Walter too. And there's this girl named Elle and she said if she can come and bring her friend they'll bring cake and ice cream!

[Libby takes a gulp of her juice and grins.]

OH MY GOSH!

[Emily's exclamation of joy at the prospect of cake and ice-cream is pretty damn loud and rather expressive. She knocks over her cup and the apple juice? Is now all over her floor.]

Oops...

[She looks down at the mess, dejectedly. Then trots to the kitchen, grabs a single paper towel and puts it in the big puddle. With a small, sheepish giggle, she turns back to Libby and says:]

I like cake an' ice-cream. [A small scowl crosses her face.] But I don't think I like Elle very much...
